Little Resistance

Dev didn’t like the vibe he was getting from this place. It was all-too-familiar from what he’d experienced on Loeria hunting Nolan. There he’d been tricked into following a false lead which had been little more than a setup designed to distract him, and this had many of the same hallmarks. No security, few obstacles to finding the person they were looking for, and an out-of-the-way location so if they did make a scene, no one would be around to see it.

“As far as I can tell the building is deserted.” Dev jogged back to Traxia’s position twenty meters out from the building.

She was hiding behind an old concrete barrier that had begun to crack and show its age, while overgrown plants and hedges crept along its edges. Dev had managed to convince her to let him perform a visual inspection of the building before they burst in there, just to make sure they weren’t running into a trap.

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“If they’re in there, they’re doing a good job of hiding it. There’s a significant amount of dust on everything, and no evidence anyone has been through. I couldn’t see the interior-most section where Rep said they were, but they’re not doing patrols and they don’t have any kind of lookout system set up. I would have been able to tell.”

“Hmm,” Traxia replied. “How do you want to play it?”

He’d worked through a few different scenarios back in the ship, though none of them had accounted for so little resistance. “We still need to be careful. If she’s half Krystrian and has inherited her people’s paranoia, she’ll make Fúl look like Handorian Monk.” He could tell from her face she wasn’t amused. “Let’s just take it slow and once we’ve identified the number of hostiles, we’ll give them a chance to surrender. I want to take her quietly if we can manage it.”

“What about the rest of them?”

Dev produced a dozen mini clamps he’d had on his belt. “We’ll leave them here, but without any comm equipment. I don’t want them calling out as soon as we’re gone.”

“Did you print those from the energy stores on my ship?”

“Where else was I going to get them?” Dev asked.

“Fine. I’ll take point. You cover me until we’re inside.”

Dev nodded. This was the part of Traxia he liked: the practical, no-nonsense soldier. He’d never asked her what she’d done in the Coalition before defecting, but he had a good idea she’d been Terra Firma.

He followed her in through unlocked doors, another red flag that only made the pit in his stomach grow larger, but everything inside was quiet. The only sounds were the occasional creak or other sign of the building settling. As best he could tell, this had been a booming office building at one point—at least it was divided up like one. Individual units made up the majority of the spaces, with a few common areas here and there. But it hadn’t been used in years, if not decades.
